Jesus Defeated Satan for Us

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.” (Matthew 4:1-2)

Adam was tempted by satan. He disobeyed God and followed the enemy.

Israel was tested by God in the desert – ”to know what was in [their] heart, whether [they] would keep his commandments or not” (Deuteronomy 8:2). Like Adam, they disobeyed God and failed the test.

Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit “to be tempted by the devil.” He is the new Adam and the new Israel. And unlike Adam and Israel, he defeated satan and passed God’s test. By doing so, he proved himself to be the Father’s loyal, submissive and obedient Son. He proved himself to be the worthy Messiah.
